Chapter 10

“You bitch!” Her best friend Stephanie screamed as she came into the small café and took her seat in front of her at the table. “I have not seen you in more than three weeks.”

Racquel leaned forward and gave her a hug before pulling back. “I ordered latte and strawberry cheesecake for us. How was the trip?”

“What trip? Oh.” Stephanie stared at the girl in amazement. “I have not seen you since my trip to Scotland.” She shook her head. “It was amazing, honey; all the craggy terrain and the men with that wonderful accent. I met someone.”

“Of course you did,” Racquel said with a fond smile. “Where is he?”

“Back at home. We are going to try and do the long distance thing and see how it works out.”

“So this is real?”

“As real as two people living thousands of miles from each other can be. The sex was incredible, and the conversation was not bad either,” she said with a grin. “Thanks, Linda.” She nodded to the woman as she came forward with the order.

The woman nodded her greying head. “You are back from your trip and Racquel here finally made it off that lodge of hers. It’s good to see my two favorite customers.”

“Good to see you too, Linda.”

The woman nodded. “Holler if you need anything else.”

“Okay, I have told you my story, now I want to hear yours.”

“What makes you think I have a story?” Racquel asked her mildly.

“You always do. Any interesting people staying at the lodge? I remember that writer that you had staying there early last year,” She glanced at her friend. “I am not talking about that asshole who broke your heart. I am talking about the real writer – the famous romance novelist that would not get out of her room, not even for meals.”

“She was busy writing.” Racquel stirred her hot chocolate with the straw absently. She had decided to get away from the lodge where the memories of Nickolai was driving her crazy and come to see Stephanie; she had to admit that the time out was doing her a world of good. Her brother called her everyday to make sure she was okay, but she still had not heard a word from Nickolai. “You heard about the plane that crashed near the lodge?”

“It’s the most interesting story since old Mr. Heckles ran buck naked in the park on Christmas Eve,” her friend said with a grin. “What came of the occupant?”

“He is alive and well. Ruel and I found him and took him back to the lodge.”

“And you nursed him back to health. I heard all of that. Anton filled me in.”

“Ruel was suspicious of him.”

“Ruel is suspicious of everyone. That’s his job.”

Racquel smiled at that. “Have you ever heard of Nickolai Yegor Kehler?”

Stephanie frowned as she tried to place the name. “It sounds familiar. You know how I am always following the society pages. Kehler…” She tapped her fingers on the Formica and then recognition dawned. “Of course
